About AFFEW

Our History

AFFEW was established in 1990 by Julia Chambers and Kate Love over their concerns for the increase in cancer in Mason County. They decided to take action and within two weeks they were holding a meeting to start an environmental education group for the community.

Over the years AFFEW has held numerous presentations on environmental concerns, workshops, Earth Day Celebrations, and balanced forums for the community. AFFEW has worked with many businesses, agencies, schools, and citizens in projects such as dune grass planting, Christmas tree and battery recycling, cleaning Ludington beaches, eradication of invasive plant species, river monitoring, household hazardous waste collection day, and recycling.

In 2022, AFFEW merged with U Dig It! Community Garden. This partnership allows for an expansion of educational opportunities for both youth and adults. UDICG strongly supports growing healthy, organic produce for our community by dedicating over 25% of its garden beds for our local food pantry, Lakeshore Food Club.

Our Mission

AFFEW nurtures a healthy planet for all by creating experiences that show people their connection to the environment, engage next generations, educate people on what they can do, and inspire everyone to take action.
