Fun with Fungi

During this event you will learn about different types of fungi  growing in the forests of Michigan. Specific topics will include identification of wild fungi (including edible and non-edible species) and the basic biology of mushrooms and other fungi. This event will be led by Josh Shields, FAP forester and wildlife biologist with the Manistee and Mason-Lake Conservation Districts, and Linda Scribner, a naturalist who received her Wild Mushroom Certification through Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS WILL NOT BE A GUIDED HIKE!  You will wander the park on your own or in groups. Josh Shields will also wander and help you identify fungi, while Linda Scribner will be stationed at a central location where you can bring her specimens. There will also be tables with information about fungi, conservation districts, and AFFEW.

There is NO COST to attend this event! Please bring your own water and snacks. Please register by September 23rd with the Mason-Lake  by calling Mason-Lake Conservation District at 231-757-3707 ext. 5 or Fungi event signup.

Presented by Manistee and Mason-Lake Conservation Districts, Forestry Assistance Program (FAP), Linda Scribner, AFFEW Friends for the Environment, and Victory Township Park.

Forest Mushrooms of Northern Michigan

Join us for an informative evening learning about Michigan mushrooms. Linda Scribner will use photographs in her PowerPoint program and numerous fresh and dried fungi specimens to educate everyone about forest mushrooms. She will share information about the biology and the key features of mushrooms and what to look for when identifying different species. Linda is a Certified Wild Mushroom Expert, licensed to commercially harvest and sell wild mushrooms in Michigan. Her presentation includes the identification of the 20 species of mushrooms that the State of Michigan has deemed safe to eat in its Food Safety Program.

Consider becoming a member of AFFEW and Sable Dunes Audubon Society for only $20/year.
